1. Aims
This model course aims to meet the mandatory minimum requirements for seafarers for familiarization, basic safety training and instruction in accordance
with Section A-V1/1 of STCW Code.

2. Objective
This syllabus covers the requirements of the international convention STCW 1978 as amended and Code (Manila amendments 2010) Chapter VI, Section
A/VI-1, Table A-VI/1-1. On meeting the minimum standard of competence proficiency in personal survival techniques, a trainee will be competent to survive
at sea in the event of ship abandonment.
The trainee will be able to demonstrate the following:
1. Don a lifejacket
2. Don and use an immersion suit
3. Safely jump from a height into the water
4. Right an inverted life raft while wearing a lifejacket
5. Swim while wearing a lifejacket
6. Keep afloat without a lifejacket
7. Board a survival craft from ship and water while wearing a lifejacket
8. Take initial actions on boarding survival craft to enhance chance of survival
9. Stream a drogue or sea-anchor
10. Operate survival craft equipment
11. Operate location devices, including radio equipment

3. Knowledge, Understanding and Proficiency
The trainee will be able to understand the following:
1. Types of emergency situations which may occur, such as Collision, fire, foundering.
2. Types of life-saving appliances normally carried on ships.
3. Equipment in survival craft.
4. Location of personal life-saving appliances.
5. Principles concerning survival, including:
a) value of training and drills
b) personal protective clothing and equipment
c) need to be ready for any emergency
d) actions to be taken when called to survival craft stations
e) actions to be taken when required to abandon ship
f) actions to be taken when in the water

4. Entry Standards
There are no particular educational requirements. All trainees must be certified by a doctor to be in good health.

5. Assessment Method
Trainee will be assessed against the learning outcomes specified in section 2 using direct observation and in section 3 using oral and/or written questions as appropriate.

6. Course Certificate
On successful completion of the course and demonstration of competence, a document may be issued certifying that the holder has met the standard of
competence specified in table A-VI/1-1 of STCW Code with validity for 5 years.

7. Course Intake Limitations
Student intake per class not to exceed 16.
Student / lecturer ratio not exceed 16:1 for theory and 6:1 for practical.

8. Staff Requirements
The instructor shall have appropriate training in instructional techniques and training methods (STCW Code, Section A-I/6, para 7).

9. Duration and Timing
1 Day

10. Venue
Theoretical sessions will be performed in QISC’s air conditioned classrooms.
Practical training sessions will be performed in QISC’s state of the art marine pool training facility.
