QP Approved Basic H2S Training

Scope (Target Group)
The H2S training programme is designed for all personnel, including visitors required to work or visit any of the QP operational areas.

Aims
To provide knowledge and understanding of:
 Hazards associated with Hydrogen Sulphide gas (H2S)
 Threshold Limit Value (TLV)
 H2S detection system in relation to H2S
 Emergency response procedures during an H2S gas related emergency
 Use of emergency escape equipment

Objectives
On completion of the course participants will have sufficient knowledge to be able to:
 Describe the hazards associated with exposure to H2S
 State the Threshold Limit Value for H2S
 Describe the correct actions to be taken upon activation of an H2S alarm
 Demonstrate the H2S emergency escape procedures
 Demonstrate the safe donning, start-up and operation of the Escape Breathing Apparatus set
 Demonstrate how to connect and disconnect from pressurized cascade system

Structure of the Course (Course Content)
Theory Explanation:
 How H2S is formed and where it is found.
 Other names used to describe H2S.
 Properties and characteristics of H2S.
 Parts per million (PPM) as a measurement parameter.
 Occupational exposure limits of H2S.
 Factors affecting individual susceptibility of H2S.
 Types of detector equipment.
 Types of respiratory equipment.
 Pre- use checks of personal detection devices and EBA.

Practical demonstration:
 Operating personal H2S detection equipment (including checks)
 Respond to an alarm.
 Donning and operating (including checks) and EBA with a mask within 30 seconds.
 Donning and operating (including checks) an EBA with a hood within 30 seconds.
 Connecting and disconnecting to and from a pressurized cascade air supply with an activated EBA which has been donned correctly.
