OPITO Travel Safely by Boat
*1. Target Group
This programme is designed to meet the initial onshore safety and emergency response training for new entrants and all personnel currently travelling and
transferring by boat to an offshore oil and gas installation.
*2. Delegate Pre-requisites
No prerequisites are required. Delegates who are in possession of a current BOSIET, FOET, Tropical BOSIET, Tropical FOET, BOSIET (with CA-EBS)
or FOET (with CA-EBS) are not required to participate in practical life raft and in-water sea survival exercises.
*3. Physical and Stressful Demands
Training and/or assessment activities contained within this Standard may include physically demanding and potentially stressful elements. All personnel
who participate in such activities must be physically and mentally capable of participating fully.
Therefore to ensure that prior to participating in practical exercises, the delegates will be required to undergo medical screening by completing appropriate
medical screening form provided by QISC.
*4. Aims and Objectives
The aims and objectives of Travel Safely by Boat (TSbB) training standard are to ensure that all personnel travelling/transferring by boat to work in offshore
areas achieve the following:
(a) Awareness of the risks to which they are exposed and how they are managed
(b) An understanding of the essential safety rules with which they must comply and how to act in an emergency
(c) An increase in their personal commitment to safety
(d) Effective use of personal safety equipment
(e) Practice and demonstrate correct method of boat transfers (simulated boat deck and installation)
*5. Learning Outcomes / Assessment Criteria
Module 1 Element 1.1 Boat Travel
To successfully complete this training, delegates must be able to demonstrate:
(1) Donning of an appropriate floatation device as used during boat transfers e.g. work-vest
(2) A method of transfer between a simulated boat deck and a simulated fixed installation deck using swing rope transfers with luggage transfers
Module 1 Element 1.2 Boat Emergencies
To successfully complete this training, delegates must be able to demonstrate:
(1) Actions in preparation of a boat emergency
(2) Actions in the event of an abandonment
(3) Survival techniques following an abandonment
*6. Delegate Performance Assessment / Certification / Validity
Delegate Performance Assessment: Delegates will be assessed against the learning outcomes Module 1 Element 1.1 & Module 1 Element 1.2 using
direct by observation.
Certification: OPITO Approved Certification with Four Years validity
*7. Instructor & Delegate Ratio
The following ratios indicate the maximum number of delegates to be supervised by one Instructor at any one time during each activity.
Theory & Demonstration 1:16
Practical life raft & in-water exercises 1:8
Practical (transfer basket) 1:4
*8. Duration and Timing
The optimum contact time for this training is seen as 2 hours.
